if your ears become painful and won't pop, (or you want them to do so painlessly) hold your breath and nose and try to blow out. this causes your ears to pop

If you have a toddler/preschooler.....get a harness leash and put a luggage tag on it! That way you can stand in line without worrying about them running off or not be identified. Also pack extra clothing in your carry on (rollup tight to save space) especially with small children..it's common sense but so easy to forget!

And splurge on trusted, even expensive diapers that do not leak.....sometimes that lengthy layover may not be enough time to check in and change. It helps to get on early, to avoid being in other passenger's way. The airline bathrooms are just not big enough!

I fly frequently and always have problems with 1 of my ears not equalizing and extreme pain. I finally realized that if I can open my mouth (hold it open)and swallow my saliva that my ear would gently pop and pain instantly relieved. I have to do this several times. May I add this may be hard to do for some people.

I recommend using the web sites that offer reduced plane fares, hotel stays, and car rentals. Sometimes they offer discounts of over 20%!

On one of my flights a flight attendant advised me. "We aren't a restaurant, don't eat the food". "We aren't a hotel, don't use the pillows and blankets". I take direction well!

While traveling on airplane always take whatever they have to offer in way of food. I didn't want to eat at the time but knew I would later. So, I accepted water and crackers and saved them for later.

Syd Barr mentioned the convenience of chewing gum to relieve pressure on the ears during plane trips.

I would add that it is just as helpful shortly after take-off. And I recommend that even children too young to chew gum can experience ear discomfort; for them, offer something to drink. I think that sipping through a straw or the like is better than gulping from a cup. For the infant, a bottle that has a just-big-enough opening in the nipple is grand, and nursing is probably the best of all.

If for some reason you have to fly without any opportunity to prepare, at least swallow your own saliva vigorously a few times around the take off and the landing.

This works because any swallowing will help to equalize pressure in the ears, and if it is accompanied by lots of movement of the jaws, so much the better.

If traveling with young children by plane, it is a good idea to have chewing gum that you can give them when preparing for landing; it helps to relieve some of the pressure in the ears which is more troubling for young ones. Use your common sense on the chewing capability of the child.

Pack a sandwich along with your frozen water bottle in an insulated lunch bag when traveling. The water bottle will keep your sandwich cold and will melt along the way and offer you a drink. You never know if the airline will have food you like, sometimes it can be pretty bad, and if your plane is delayed you have something to eat at a cheap price. Better to be safe than sorry!

To make your luggage stand out, put easy identification marks, i.e., all the same color pom pom's, knitting wool bows, straps, etc. Makes it easy to spot your bags at the baggage claim area. - Syd Barr
