Do what I did last summer. Standing in front of my makeup mirror I spray my dried hair OR wet hair with a half bottle of perioxide with the other half in water. Shake the bottle and spray away, or should I say mist away.
This makes your hair look so natural and as if the sun has lightened your hair.
Get a non-permanent color - they last about 4-6 weeks & are gentler then the permanent color dyes. There are several companies that make the non permenent dyes. Also, have you tried a clarifying shampoo? It might help, or a spray on shine treatment.
If you have a Sally Beauty Supply near you pick up "Lamaur 30 Minute Bleach Hair Lightener". Ask one of the clerks about "capping it to create highlights" It's a lot less drastic then changing all your hair color. I have strawberry blonde hair and this is how I keep my "summer color" during the winter.
I would not mess with using just peroxide. There are some very good hair dye kits out there that are inexpensive and do a great job. I recommend Revlon Colorsilk for around $3 or $4.
