Muriatic acid (home depot is stocked there with the pool supplies in gallon bottles. The muriatic acid causes tiny "pits" to form in the stone (when i say tiny, I mean you can't see the pits at all, they are almost microscopic). Then buy the stain of your choice at home depot, they have special concrete and stone paints and stains.

The muriatic acid will allow the paint/stain to adhere to the stone/concrete surface. Be careful and don't breathe the muriatic acid fumes. Oh, allow the concrete/stone to completely dry before painting or staining.
