I need to kill the moss in my rock flower bed. Is vinegar going to be safe for the surrounding plants?
Short answer-NO. (Vinegar will kill just about everything it touches in a garden, and will spread underground just like water to the roots of the plants you want to keep)
Long answer: What you need to do is dig out every bit of the moss, and find out what is happening in the environment to encourage the moss-then eliminate the environment that is favourable to the moss.
It could be anything from too wet conditions, too much shade, wrong soil for anything else, un-sterile (seriously) rocks that have moss spores on them. Best thing is to Google the local extension office to find their website, then use the search feature to find out more about moss in your specific area. You should find tonnes of information pages on the website that you can read or print out for future reference.
You could use the words master gardeners and the name of your county as a search term, too. They are trained by the extension office and have pages on the extension website that might help.
