I also plant sunflower seeds after the danger of all frost--usually the first or second week of May here, in zone 5a. Last year I decided I needed to try planting some things later to see what would happen. I planted a 4ft.tall variety of sunflower seed at the beginning of August, and had fresh sunflowers around the end of Sept./beginning Oct.
