I love how you all say, "almost as good as Starbucks," and I think Starbucks is maybe halfway as good as where I get my Chai Lattes. (And they're cheaper, too.) For those of you who read it and see "latte", there's no coffee in this. Thank you very much.

I was looking for a recipe because I'm sick of having to settle for Starbucks in the morning, and my usual cafe is not on my way to work. I have some chai tea bags, so I think I'm going to try steeping them in milk. And I will definitely ask my friend who is the world's best barista...

Chai Recipe:
3-4 parts formosan tea (a tannin-free black tea, necessary so that you can boil the chai for sufficient time to bring out the flavor)
2 parts crushed cinnamon sticks
2 parts sliced fresh ginger, cloves
1 part cardamom pods
1 part bay leaves
0.25 part star anise (a tiny piece)
1 part black peppercorns (optional)

Method: Simmer ingredients in approx. 2 liters of water for 20-30 minutes, (reducing water to about 1 liter or more in the process. Strain, add honey, cool and store in sterilized bottles in the fridge. Will keep for at least two weeks.

This makes a delicious chai latte, or you can ladle it directly from the pot into mugs with milk and honey when having guests over in cold weather. I used to serve it at about midnight at my parties at university - it was a real hit!

To make chai latte, fill about 1/3 of your mug with the chai syrup and top with frothed milk and cinnamon powder. (Sorry, I don't know the imperial system so I've used metric.)

I have the "Shonfelds" brand of chai latte from Shoppers and to my surprise they don't have a recipe for me. It includes spiced chai instant mix, vanilla sugar and cinnamon stick. Can anybody help me out?

I buy the Tazo brand of Chai Tea tea bags. I'm pretty sure that's the exact brand Starbucks uses to make their chai tea. I just microwave a mug of milk for about 2 mins and then let the bag steep in the milk for a while. Once I think it's ready, I add about 1 tbs of sugar and voila! I think it's almost exactly like Starbucks. Hope this helps!

I just made a hot chai latte, I have chai tea bags by lipton. I microwaved one bag in a mug, then added "French vanilla" ice cream. It has a few spices of it's own and a tsp. of sugar. It's so good.

I have made my own chai tea for years.

3 cups cold water
6-8 tea bags
1 1/2 cups sugar ( or more if you have a sweet tooth)
2 cinnamon sticks,
1 1/2 tablespoons of cloves
1 teaspoon of ginger
vanilla

Bring the water to a boil, then add the tea bags, cinnamon, cloves and ginger and simmer for 15 minutes. Then add the sugar and simmer for 30 minutes or until the mixture is thick and soupy. ( You are basically making a syrup concentrate) Then strain Add Vanilla and keep in a sealed container in the fridge.

When you are ready to try it, add to milk ( hot or cold, depending on how you like it) I usually use 1/3 cup of concentrate to 1 cup of milk.

The concentrate usually keeps for 2 or so weeks in the fridge. :)

RE: Chai Latte Recipe

I have tried many chai latte recipes over the years and still like Starbucks better, so don't give up hope if at first you don't succeed. New recipes are circulated all the time.

What I make instead of Starbucks is low acid strong decaf coffee mixed with 2 or 3 diet flavorings from www.davincigourmet.com and soy milk.

The coffee is brewed with the Toddy System. Keeps in the fridge for weeks. Bought it at World Market. Also available at www.toddycafe.com (PS they also have low acid tea).

The DaVinci flavoring are also available at lo carb stores, Ross, Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Holly (01/20/2006)

RE: Chai Latte Recipe

Barbara,

I haven't tried Chai Latte from Starbucks, but I'm an Independent Watkins Associate, and we carry Chai (a mix of green and black teas and spices), as well as Chai Latte that's made to mix up as you would hot chocolate (it's very good). I don't know if you've heard of the Watkins Company before or not, but it's known for its Double-Strength Vanilla, Cinnamon, Ground Pepper, Petro Carbo Salve, Menthol-Camphor Ointment, among other things. If you'd like a catalog, just send me an e-mail and I'll be glad to send you one.

RE: Chai Latte Recipe

In Canada we have a brand of tea called 'Tetley'. If it is available in the US, they have 2 ways to make chai. Chai tea bags are slowly simmered in 2% milk, or you can buy the concentrate in a 1 litre tetra pack.

I love the tea bag, as it is cheaper to use. I get as many as 3 cups from one bag... just let it steep and microwave the cooled down leftovers, if you have any. If this brand is not available to you, check the tea aisle for a different brand. You could also try a tea shop or Indian ethnic shop. (01/21/2006)

RE: Chai Latte Recipe

I have bought the Tastefully Simple brand-- don't. Although it tasted very good, for $10.00 you only get about half of a can due to settling- and the can isnt that big to begin with! A better deal is International Foods (the one that makes all the flavored instant coffee mixes). They sell a chai latte mix that is very good for about $3.99 (or less on sale) - just make it the way it says or I use half water and half milk to make it creamier. It's the best I've tasted other than from a coffee shop. (01/21/2006)

RE: Chai Latte Recipe

Here is a recipe for a mix you can make at home that I like better than any mix I have tried commercially. Please don't skip the cardamom; if you shop around a bit, you can find it reasonably, and it keeps well.

Chai Tea Mix:

  • 1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
  • 1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
  • 1 cup French Vanilla flavored non-dairy creamer
  • 2 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup instant tea (plain, unsweetened) (I prefer decaf, then I can enjoy my chai anytime!)
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. In small batches, whir in blender until you have a fine powder. Remix the smaller batches.

Mix 2 heaping tablespoons with a cup of hot water (adjust to your own taste) and enjoy!

**************************************

If you're looking for something with less calories, my daughter and I have found we really like the "India Spice" flavor of the Celestial Seasons chai tea (bags) with the sugar-free French Vanilla Coffee Mate. It comes with and without caffiene.

Jill

PS--we make the mix in very large batches, both for ourselves and for gifts! (01/23/2006)

RE: Chai Latte Recipe

Here is an easy recipe: Heat 8 oz water. Steep 1 chai tea bag per instructions (approx 5 min). I like Tazo or The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf bags. While the tea is steeping, heat 1/4 cup milk (not too hot). Remove tea bag, add milk, and add 3 to 4 TBS of International Coffee French Vanilla non-dairy creamer (the liquid kind). Stir and enjoy. You don't get the nice froth on top, but it is a lot cheaper than Starbucks. (04/13/2006)

RE: Chai Latte Recipe

OK, you want a LATTE. This means you will need an espresso machine. I think Target sells one for $30 if you don't have one already. (If you like to go to starbucks, this investment will pay off in a little over a week). You also need a chai tea bag -- preferably black flavored tea -- and some espresso-ground coffee. If you drink this a lot you may want to keep a little container mixed with equal parts cardamom and cloves, and 2 parts cinnamon to every 1 part of that mixture.

Now, empty your chai tea bag into the bottom of the espresso screen and put your ground espresso beans on top of that. When it brews, the water will be pushed through the espresso and tea, so that the resulting brew will be distinctively chai tea flavored as it passes through the bottom of the cup.

Now mix the chai espresso with honey (to taste), the spice mixture, and any kind of milk you want (half n half, 2%, steamed milk, etc..).

This drink is also delicious iced. Just ice it after you dissolve the honey. Hope that helped! (06/14/2006)

RE: Chai Latte Recipe

There is a Ginger Tea mix, in a foil packet, purchased in Asian stores that when added to a pot of black tea and milk, makes a very fine Chai Tea substitute for the dearly loved Chai Tea from Starbuck's....look for the Ginger Tea at the Asian Market, in a box just like a Lipton's package....Yummmy!!!! RE: Chai Latte Recipe

I brew a normal pot of coffee and add about a teaspoon of cinnamon in with the grounds before I brew it, then add honey to the coffee in my cup. Add hot milk to coffee in equal proportions with a little vanilla and VOILA~

Tastes almost the same as Starbucks (10/01/2007)

RE: Chai Latte Recipe

I use the Oregon Chai Tea Latte concentrate ($3.99 at Trader Joes). It's a 32oz box. Mix it 50-50 with milk, microwave and it's good to go.

I also saw it for sale on their website: http://www.oregonchai.com/ Corey (10/31/2007)
