I have seen a bowl made with rolled up paper tubes then I think varnished or painted? Anyone know how to do this?

Go to craftster.org and do a search for paper bowls. There are tutorials on how to make these bowls.

In school, we used to make baskets by folding long strips of paper, then using the strips to weave. You can attach a handle, too. We then painted them and gave them a coat of PVA glue which dried clear like varnish. They made nice Mother's Day gifts with sweets or etc in them.
