Garden: Gourds as Birdhouses

Here is a photo of a bird house "neighborhood community" that my dad and step-mom created out of gourds they grew last year.

What is the process for drying the gourds? Did he let them dry for a year, Then cut the hole, or cut the hole and let them dry? Thanks! Pam email: mptidemann AT iowatelecom.net

If you don't clean them out, do you cut the hole for the birds, or do they peck a hole themselves? This is a great idea!

Hi. I made these before, and we didn't clean them out. You let the birds eat it, then they make their nest. The woman at the nursery where I got the gourds shared that with me.

Hi I am wondering how the inside is cleaned out?
Is it like doing a pumpkin?

Thanks for sharing. I use to grow gourds & make bird nest as your parents & sat on the front porch late in the day to watch the birds go in & out of the nest & they eat lot of insects, good luck.
