Growing: Meadow Foam
Botanical Name: Limnathes douglasii
Life Cycle: annual
Planting Time: fall or early spring
Height: 8" to 12"
Exposure: full sun
Soil: adapted to moist, poorly drained soils
Hardiness: n/a
Bloom Time: spring and early summer
Flower: yellow centers bordered by white edges
Foliage: green
Propagation: seeds
Suggested Use: beds, borders, rock gardens, paths, edgings and walkways
Growing Hints: Sow seeds directly in the garden in fall or early spring in a sunny location where soil stays consistently moist (not wet). Germination takes about three weeks. Seedlings should be thinned to 6" apart. If soil is nutrient rich, fertilizing should not be necessary.
Interesting Facts: Also called the poached egg flower, Meadow Foam is currently being grown in the Pacific Northwest as an alternative crop. The seeds contain light, high-quality oil suitable for use in the cosmetic industry. The oil also has potential industrial applications as a biodegradable lubricant.
