I am looking for a slow cooker sweet potato recipe (not using canned) that tastes like traditional sweet potatoes. I have searched the web and can't find any with that traditional taste. I am hoping one of you have such a recipe, or maybe suggestions on how I can make up my own slow cooker recipe using butter and brown sugar, and suggestions of cooking times. Any help is appreciated.
(6) Medium/3 lbs. sweet potatoes/yams, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch cubes 1 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce 2/3 cup packed brown sugar 3 Tbsp. butter or margarine, melted 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 cup chopped nuts, toasted; optional Ground cloves, ginger, allspice, nutmeg to taste
Place sweet potatoes in 2- to 3 1/2 quart slow cooker. Mix remaining ingredients except nuts; spoon over potatoes. Cover and cook on high heat setting one hour. Then three hours on low or until potatoes are very tender. Sprinkle with nuts if using. Makes 6 servings. Recipe can be doubled. To toast nuts, bake uncovered in ungreased shallow pan in 350 degrees F oven about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
Or cook in ungreased heavy skillet over medium-low heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently until browning begins, then stirring constantly until golden brown.
To thicken sauce: Remove cooked potatoes, cook on high setting for 15 minutes or until thick.

RE: Sweet Potato Recipe for a Slow Cooker
The following recipe is from "Fresh From the Vegetarian Slow Cooker" and is fantastic!
Smashed Sweet Potatoes with Dried Cranberries:
4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2" thick slices
1/2 cup apple juice
1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1/3 cup sweetened dried cranberries
Place sweet potato slices in a lightly oiled slow cooker. In a small bowl, combine apple juice and brown sugar and pour over potatoes. Season w/salt and pepper to taste. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours, until potatoes are tender.
Just before serving, smash the potatoes w/a potato masher until smooth and fold in cranberries. Serve hot. (11/22/2005)
