Identifying Small Brown Snake in Texas

What is the name of the little brown snake that lives in the grass around the foundations of homes in Texas? They are usually 6 or 8 inches long.

The one at my place is named Norman.

Joking aside, more info is needed. Any stripes, crossmarks, etc. Are the sides light brown or black? Any spots or other marks on its head? If you don't want to get THAT close (and I don't blame you) look at it through binoculars.
