Love this because it's very easy to make and relatively quick to fix. This is also very kid friendly and tastes great!

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk

  • 1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
  • 1/2 cup fine cracker meal
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. mustard
  • 2 cups grated American cheese

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together lightly. Cut 1 loaf French bread in half lengthwise. Spread meat mixture over cut surface of halves. Wrap foil around crust of each half (make like a boat), cover crust completely, leaving top uncovered. Bake on cookie sheet at 350 degrees F for 25 minutes. Garnish with cheese strips. Bake 5 minutes more.

Servings: about 10-12
Prep Time: 20 Minutes
Cooking Time: 30 Minutes

Wouldn't the raw ground beef make the bread uneatable?

grandma1940, no, the raw beef won't affect the bread crumbs. Bread crumbs are used in a variety of ground meat recipes including meat balls and meat loaf. The reason for the bread crumbs is to add texture and bulk to the dish.

Robin, I giggled checking out your recipe because when I was growing up my grama made something really similar that she called S.O.S. I later found out her meaning was 'S**t On A Shingle'. Sure am glad I didn't know what it stood for or never would have eaten and liked it as a we one - LOL! Think I'll try yours for old time memoy sake :-)
