I opened a very small online jewelry shop a few months ago and am researching good lip gloss recipes so I can expand my shop. I can tell you that there is absolutely no McDonald's grease, whale blubber, or earthworms in any of the recipes I found! These are the most popular ingredients that have been used (though not all at once).

--Jojoba oil
--Almond oil
--Candy flavorings (oil-based)
--Food colorings (never use alcohol-based)
--Beeswax
--Paraffin wax
--Preservatives (most likely potassium sorbate)
--Olive oil
--Cocoa butter
--Aloe vera gel
--Essential oils
--Pretty much whatever else you want to put in!

You can use a small bit of Coca-Cola for a soda-flavored gloss, or cherry juice for a lip stain and cherry flavoring, etc. Just google Lip Gloss Recipe and you'll find thousands. Or check www.makingcosmetics.com. Hope that works!

I'm doing a project on this, for my big report. I found out that lip gloss has vitamin E, shea butter or cocoa butter, and aloe vera gel or sometimes almond oil. That's all I got so far.

Here is what my kids like: Take some sweet almond oil and heat it in a pyrex cup in a pan of water. (Make sure to raise the cup from the bottom of the pan with a trivet, or some crumpled aluminum foil.) When it is warm, shave some beeswax into the oil until it melts.

My kids like it plain; but at this point you can add candy (oil-type) flavorings, and even tint it with a lip-safe color, such as a bit from a lipstick, or lip gloss colorant from the craft store.

Let it cool. If it is too hard, remelt and add a bit more oil; if too soft, more beeswax.
