It looks like what I call an old-time phlox. I inherited one with my grandmother's house 23 years ago and we are both still here.

Thanks for all the responses! Seems the majority has recognized Phlox, so now I know. Next year I plan on some trellis support for them.

Definitely perennial phlox.

The flowers and the long, narrow leaves are the same as I have on my 50+ year old phlox. Almost every year I get a hummingbird around them.

Definitely not a butterfly bush, it looks like our fireweed that we love out here in WA. Ask your old neighbors, ask at church, ask your local county extension office (they have a program called 'Master Gardeners' whose job it is, on your tax dollars, to answer just this sort of question! They love to talk gardening, so call them up and keep the number!

It kind of looks like one. Usually there are more blossoms. Is it growing as a bush? Or is there only one stem coming out from the ground? I looked at the one i have and there are smaller stems branching off in all directions with flowers on. Yours looks like it's just one stem with a big flower. It kind of looks like a garden phlox to me.
