My husband has been wanting to find a recipe that his mother used to make. It was a Layered Pecan Cake. It was a white cake which she put chopped pecans in the cake and halves of pecan between layers and on top along with sprinkling with toasted coconut.

This sounds like the Southern classic, "Lane Cake".
Google the following: "southernfood lane cake" and you will find a recipe made with a mix. This one doesn't have the coconut but I've seen recipes where they sprinkle it on top or mix in a can of coconut in the filling. Another: "recipegoldmine lane cake" will give you a recipe made from scratch including coconut. Hope you enjoy, this is a really good cake!
