  • 1 1/4 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. white vinegar

  • 1/2 tsp. ground mustard
  • 1/2 tsp. chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp. ground allspice
  • 8 sandwich buns, split

Directions

In a Dutch oven, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add the ketchup, water, brown sugar, salt, mustard, chili powder and allspice. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 35-40 minutes or until heated through. Spoon about 1/2 cup meat mixture onto each bun.

I've used cinnamon instead of allspice in ground meat dishes, and that's delicious, too.

Here's a recipe I learned on a week-end campout as a girl scout leader years ago. Because there are just 2 of us now, I use 1 lb of ground meat. I begin by browning onion, celery and sometimes a little green pepper if I have some around. After they are translucent, add the ground meat and cook until browned. With this amount of ground beef, I add 2 cans of tomato soup and THAT'S IT! I cook it for a short time just to let the flavors meld. Quick and simple and my husband loves it. I serve it over hamburger rolls or rice.
