Two Hundred Dollar Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle red food coloring
  • 3 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/4 cup cake flour
  • 1 scant tsp. salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. soda
Frosting:
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 8 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. flour
  • 2/3 cup milk (at room temperature)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Directions

Mix well red food coloring and cocoa; set aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and coloring mixture. Mix well. Sift together flour and salt. Add dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla. Remove from mixer. Add and mix by hand vinegar and soda. Bake 30 minutes in loaf or layer pan at 350 degrees F.

For Frosting: Cream margarine, shortening, sugar and flour (one at a time). Add milk and vanilla. Beat well at high speed.

This is the most amazing cake. I have been making it for 35 years and as long as I have family and friends who request it, I will continue. We call this a "Red Velvet Cake". The store bought version is just not the same. Robin, thank you for sharing this with all who need a little taste of "Heaven".
