Where Can I Buy Washing Soda?

I am starting to make most of my own cleaning products and I am really enjoying it, but lots of the recipes that I have found require something called Washing soda. I can't find anything like that in any of the stores around here. Can anyone help me?

I find it in the laundry soap section of our local grocery stores. I use it for cleaning and to make my own laundry soap. Arm and Hammer brand is what I use. Check your local grocery stores, I'll bet you will find it. (10/09/2006)

I thought it was just Bicarbonate of Soda that comes in a box at a cheap price, made by Arm and Hammer? It certainly works, so it must be for washing as described on the box? Follow instructions to prevent caking, sandy residue when dry.

Editor's Note: Washing soda is sodium carbonate. Baking soda or Bicarbonate of soda is sodium bicarbonate. They are different chemical compounds. You can eat bicarbonate of soda, but not sodium carbonate. (10/10/2006)

You can buy Sodium Carbonate (aka Washing soda, aka Laundry Soda) in any pool store. Look for PH increaser and several brands are 100% sodium carbonate also called soda ash. (10/24/2006)

Washing soda is Sodium Carbonate. It is available at pool supply stores or Lowe's and Home Depot pool section as a Ph adjuster.

It is also the principal ingredient in Powdered Dishwasher Detergents (plus some perfumes). Interestingly there are very few MSDS available for dishwasher detergents. However, some box labels will state they contain sodium carbonate.

In addition, it is now offered in hardware stores and paint departments as a substitute for TSP (trisodium phosphate). Check the label for ingredients. Of course the best way to buy it is as Arm and Hammer Washing Soda, but I have trouble finding a store selling it anymore. (05/02/2008)

I called the 1800 # provided below and was able to order 4 boxes of the Washing Soda with no shipping fees. Therefore the total was around $15. I now have extra to give to friends that I give my homemade laundry soap recipe. They can never find the Washing soda. The nearest place that sells it is 100 miles away. (10/17/2008)

I called 1-800-524-1328 and the CSR was really great. She waived all shipping charges and only charged $3.99 per box. I'm paying $15.96 for 4 boxes of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda. You can bet I'm a happy camper. I could not find it anywhere in NE MS, NW AL or mid south TN. (11/21/2008)

You can make your own Washing soda very cheaply by pouring regular Baking soda into a baking dish and cooking it for 1/2 hour at 350 degrees. My sister found this out on wikipedia, because she couldn't find washing soda anywhere either. We tried it and it works fine when making your own laundry soap. (01/14/2009)

I buy a 55 ounce box of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda at Wegman's for $2.19 or you can call a local nursery and ask if they carry Soda ash. Southern States here in Virginia carries a 50 lb bag for $26.99. Soda ash is the same as Washing soda. (02/27/2009)

I live in Southern California (Riverside County) and could not find Arm and Hammer Washing soda and I had to buy the much more expensive pool supply sodium carbonate. I always check whenever I go to a new store and was very happy and surprised to find it at WinCo in Perris, CA. I am hoping this will help others find it easier in this area. $2.70 is much better than $8.79 I have been paying. (06/05/2009)

It should be near the powdered laundry detergents. The most common brand is Arm and Hammer, but if I recall correctly, the box is a brighter yellow than their Baking Soda box. (07/25/2009)

Oxi-Clean has washing soda in it and makes a good substitute if you don't want to spend a lot of time looking for "pure" washing soda. Oxi-Clean's ingredient list shows washing soda under a different chemical name. When this product first came out, and I couldn't find it in this small town, online research showed the chemical name equivalents. For me, it was cheaper to buy a $5 tub of generic Oxi-Clean at Dollar General rather than spend more $ looking for washing soda-only elsewhere.

That said, thanks for all the tips y'all have posted. If it's ever available locally, I'll buy it, or just bake baking soda as one poster listed its recipe via wikipedia. (07/25/2009)

You can substitute PH Plus. Its found in the swimming pool supplies at Walmart. My Walmart only sells large boxes of regular baking soda in the detergent aisle. Guess they don't know there is a difference between regular soda and washing soda. duckie43 (07/29/2009)

It's often sold in old fashioned hardware stores, if you can find one. Possibly even in a newer on, in the painting preparation department. It would be near TSP, tri-sodium phosphate which is for cleaning really dirty surfaces before painting, that sort of thing.You used to be able to find it with detergents and borax. No more. Agree with MCW. It's at most big grocery/discount stores, like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc. Look in the detergent section in the less visible places, like down on the very bottom shelf toward the middle of the section. Companies pay to place their products in the most eye-catching locations in stores, and the washing soda doesn't seem to get that kind of promotion, so it's usually in the least desirable position. Once you know that, though, it's usually not hard to find! And of course, if you don't see it, ask.

One caution about the suggestions for online purchase. Washing soda's a relatively heavy thing to ship, and a cheap thing to buy, so any shipping costs are likely to affect the price significantly in the wrong direction! (11/01/2009)

Meijer carries Arm and Hammer Washing Soda. You'll find it in with the Borax in the laundry aisle. If your local Meijer doesn't have it. Ask them to order it for you. They usually will special order items for a customer at no extra cost. Good luck! (11/01/2009)

I buy Arm and Hammer Washing Soda at Fred Meyers in WA state. I think they are a part of the Kroger stores. It's on a top shelf in the laundry section along with Borax (which I use in homemade dishwasher detergent.) I use washing soda for all my tough jobs, including scrubbing the bathtub, it removes oils fast and easy! I also use it on really tough cooking pans and other messes. I couldn't find it either, but on Ebay found a place that sells it and gave details on the active ingredient....sodium carbonate. Went to a $.99 cent store and they sell Rinso Laundry Detergent which has sodium carbonate in it. Then went to Wal-Mart looking for Fels Naptha, which they don't have, but do have Zote soap which I've seen advertised to make your own laundry detergent. You can get 20 mule team Borax at most grocery stores. Saved a ton on shipping by not ordering this stuff online. :) (02/25/2010)

I have called about 50 different convenience stores in my area and found one that new what it was and carried it, but was out right now, but I also called Harris teeter (Durham, NC) and they do carry it. Some people say that Vons carries it but the closet one to me is 221 miles away, my pharmacist also said its just sodium carbonate, which is ph+ in the pool section of Walmart.
