This is to all you wonderful people who have written to me about Fred. Thank you, thank you! You have such great ideas with the claw covers, the separate bed on top of my bed, scratching post, tape and declawing. All good suggestions. I have lots to work with now. Thanks also for the nice things you said and we will try our best to keep Fred happy and good!
Fred is pretty and the pose just looks like he is
thinking how to get into trouble or should I say 'more'! Fred is lucky to have found you. I hope
you get the claw covers they sound good and might
help your Fred.
bye

He looks like a wonderful cat. Have you thought about getting him his own bed to put on top of yours? That way he might scratch it instead of your bed. Another thing is try to find him a scratching post or pad that he loves. My cats love those cardboard things, basically strips of corrugated cardboard cut into thin 2 inch strips on it's side in a flat box.

You are great people to adopt an older cat and then keep him with the problems he has.
Fred is very handsome. As far as the clawing problem goes, they now make little plastic covers that fit over the cats nails and are smooth so no more shredded furniture. It sure beats declawing a cat which then leaves them unable to defend themselves. Most dog catalogs sell the covers, Pet Edge, Dr.'s Foster & Smith, etc.
Thank you each of you so much for the very helpful suggestions. I will definitely give them good consideration and take action!
You could have him declawed, purchase covers for his claws (Foster Smith sells them) or you can buy some spray on stuff that cats will not go around. We have an old cat that has been declawed and he did fine but I understand some cats have major problems with it. we didin't know that when we had it done.
one thing you can do is put double sided tape on the furniture then when the cat put his paws onit he runs away because they don't like the feeling of the sticky tape.
