My name is Fred and I think I am 7 years old. I am a shorthair, extremely large cat. My owners got me at the local animal shelter in 2001. I had been there the longest and they felt sorry for me. They found out why someone gave me away. I like to rip furniture to shreds, as well as anything else I can get my claws on. I spend my days sleeping on my owners beds, ripping their sheets and snagging their bedspreads. Mooching is my favourite evening sport while watching tv and napping. If I am really naughty, they put me outside and I hide in the bushes until they open the door again. That doesn't happen too often because I would miss the beds too much.
This is to all you wonderful people who have written to me about Fred. Thank you, thank you! You have such great ideas with the claw covers, the separate bed on top of my bed, scratching post, tape and declawing. All good suggestions. I have lots to work with now. Thanks also for the nice things you said and we will try our best to keep Fred happy and good!
Fred is pretty and the pose just looks like he is thinking how to get into trouble or should I say 'more'! Fred is lucky to have found you. I hope you get the claw covers they sound good and might help your Fred. bye =^..^= meoowmom
He looks like a wonderful cat. Have you thought about getting him his own bed to put on top of yours? That way he might scratch it instead of your bed. Another thing is try to find him a scratching post or pad that he loves. My cats love those cardboard things, basically strips of corrugated cardboard cut into thin 2 inch strips on it's side in a flat box. Susan from ThriftyFun
Fred is very handsome. As far as the clawing problem goes, they now make little plastic covers that fit over the cats nails and are smooth so no more shredded furniture. It sure beats declawing a cat which then leaves them unable to defend themselves. Most dog catalogs sell the covers, Pet Edge, Dr.'s Foster & Smith, etc.
You could have him declawed, purchase covers for his claws (Foster Smith sells them) or you can buy some spray on stuff that cats will not go around. We have an old cat that has been declawed and he did fine but I understand some cats have major problems with it. we didin't know that when we had it done.
one thing you can do is put double sided tape on the furniture then when the cat put his paws onit he runs away because they don't like the feeling of the sticky tape.
