Backing Your Quilts

I make many quilts for charities, as well as for other gifts. The perfect backing is a sheet. Twin size is the right size for the quilts our church makes for charities. Or you can buy a larger one on sale and use the extra for part of the pattern on the top of the quilt. I find twin sheets as low as $3.00 and they are a nice quality.

The only problem with this concept is the thread count is different on the bed sheet that that of quilting cotton. Therefore when the finished quilt is washed the quilt top will shrink at a different rate than the bottom. Over time it will cause it to bunch up in places. It could even cause it to tear depending on how closely you stitched your design on the top.
