My tip is for wrapping paper. When wrapping a child's gift, use the Sunday comics. When wrapping a gift for the grandparents take a brown grocery sack and cut it open. Then let your child be creative on the side that has no store markings. Then use to wrap the gift.
During the 1960s I sent one of my sons to a birthday party with a gift in a shoe box (which are very popular with little boys) wrapped with brown paper bag and those little creepy plastic critters stuck all over it. It was the hit of the party before it was opened.

We do this all the time for gifts for just about everyone! As a plus it's earth friendly since those paper bags aren't going in the trash .. Plus it gets the kids involved in the actual giving of the gift and helps them learn generosity on a basic level .. And it's so cute ;)
