Delicious and easy for entertaining or to snack on.
Ingredients:
1 1/3 sticks margarine (melted)
1/2 lb. sharp cheddar cheese (any kind but I use Kraft)
1 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups shifted flour
Directions:
Let cheese sit out for 1-2 days, so it is easy to work with.
Place cheese in blender. Add melted margarine. Slowly add flour to mix. Add salt and cayenne pepper.
Place mix in a tube that squeezes out, or make your own with a sandwich bag by cutting out the tip.
Squeeze on to pan. Place cheese straws into refrigerator for 15-20 min to firm them up. Place into pre-heated oven 375 degrees F. Bake 12-13 minutes.

As a child, I enjoyed these little cheese rolls from a grocery store bakery/deli counter, but have not seen them for about 20 years. They were small straw-like rolls, about 6 inches long and less than a half inch in diameter. The outside was a thin cheese-flavored wafer-like coating that could be unpeeled in layers. The inside was a soft cheddar cheese filling.
They were much like the chocolate flavored straws with a French-sounding name that begins with "P" but which I can't recall the name. Does anyone know the name of these, or a source from which to buy them?

RE: Cheese Flavored Straws
I am not sure about the chocolate ones or the name .. but I know that the restaurant called "La Madeleines" carries cheese straws and they are delicious! Especially with their tomato basil soup. (09/29/2008)
