Don't carry a purse when you shop, wear jeans or pants with deep pockets and only carry your wallet and keys in your pockets.

You will find that you really don't need all that excess stuff you collect in your purse.

Very good advice, Syd! And if you can legally do so, carry a small pistol in one of those pockets (be sure it's loaded, and that you know how to use it). If this is not an option, a small can of mace or pepper spray could come in handy. Look around and try to identify any potential threat. Be alert, and be sure to appear alert. Thugs prey upon people who look vulnerable, so try to appear confident and capable of defending yourself. A thug will pass you by and wait for the next person he sees who is crossing the parking lot looking at his (or her) own shoes.
