Bar Keepers Friend is less than $2 a can and you don't have to use hardly any elbow grease. It works on fixtures, porcelain....everything. I have tried all others(limeaway, clr, kaboom, tilex, oven off, orange pledge, scrubbing bubbles and any other product at the local store). Only BKF removes hard water. I live in Austin,TX. All water comes from an aquifer and is excessively HARD. Two bucks is hard to beat.

The cheapest way, white vinegar. Let you shower head soak in it over night, or tie a bag filled with vinegar (if you have a stationary head) overnight (rubber bands work too). Lay paper towels down over and around, wherever the white is, douse liberally with vinegar. Wipe away in the morning, you'll be amazed! It's cheap and doesn't smell awful and chemically like cleaners do.

The best thing I have found for lime buildup is Limeaway.

I use a product called Bathroom Cleaner Plus, I get it from my local Amway dealer. It is expensive but you only need a little and it lasts a long time.
I have really hard water and this works great.

Also you can try CLR, you can find it at most supermarket and hardware stores.
