When to Prune Lilac Bush |
|
|
My lilac bushes do not have too many flowers this year. When is the proper time to prune? Perhaps I trimmed too much last year. I try to keep them from growing too large and out of control.

If flowers are the goal (and, with a lilac, is there really any other purpose?) the most important thing to keep in mind is that they bloom on the previous season's growth. So, if you were to go out and prune them in late autumn or early spring, in an attempt to"clean up" the garden, you'd be cutting off all of the potential blooms. Let the flowers bloom, enjoy their heavenly scent, and then prune away----Prune After Bloom!
Go to: suite101.com and type in the search box (pruning lilacs.

Thanks everyone...guess I better prune soon at least whatever few blooms I have.

It is my experience that lilac bushes tend to bloom in cycles, every second year(in my climate) you get loads of blossoms. The alternate year, very few. Be sure to cut off the spent blossoms after they die, especially when you are not going to do a massive pruning job.

You are suppose to cut right it after bloom dies because they flower on the new growth.

It's possible you trimmed too much last year. I did the same thing two years ago and this year I finally got some blooms, not as many tho. Right after the blooms die is when you should prune them.
