Painting Brass |
I have some brass and upholstered kitchen chairs (from the 1980s) that are extremely comfortable. They swivel and rock, are well constructed, and are still in sound condition but the brass is out of style and the upholstery is beginning to look worn. I don't want to give them up when we move to our new house. I can handle the reupholstery but does anyone know of a paint product that I can use on the metal parts to update their appearance? Thanks!

Rather than trying to paint the brass, you might want to oxidize the metal, using a weak acid solution. A DYI demo of this process, being used on a brass firescreen, can be visited at: http://www.diynet.com/diy/hi_fireplace/artic ... 2037,DIY_13914_2703961,00.html It shouldn't be too costly, and will avoid the problem of paint flaking off and having to be redone repeatedly. If you DON'T like what you get after oxidizing the metal, of course, you have the perfect, pristine surface to use for enameling or using the "stone" sort of paint. Best of luck.
