17 Birthday Party Ideas?

My daughter's birthday is on November 2nd and she is turning 17. I have no idea what to do for her. I didn't have a sweet 16 for her so I want to have something big like a sweet 17. LOL

I know when I was 17, I was a young teenager who didn't have a house party but went out with friends to celebrate. We went to the movies and a restaurant afterwards.

Did you speak to your daughter about having a party? What her thoughts? Maybe she can let you know what kind of party she may want?

Here are some party ideas for a girl's 17th:

  • I know my girlfriends and I love to dance when we were about 17. Take her and some of her friends to a dance class or hire a pro for an hour in your house. Have birthday cake inspired smoothies after.

  • Bonfire barbecues are fun, too. Lots of food, music, and warmth!
  • Movie and pizza night. It's the right time for horror flicks. Maybe a scary movie marathon sleepover.
  • Girls night out, in. My 17th was a girls night out mock up. We all got a bunch of fancy clothes and did our hair, nails, then had a dinner and karaoke in my house.

This is a special time in a teens life so it is nice that you would like a "special" birthday party.

  • It seems one of the biggest problems with having a teen birthday party is not really knowing what they like doing the best or if there is something they would really like to do.
  • For one of my granddaughter's teen birthdays we decided to have planning sessions with her and her friends so they could decide how to proceed.

  • I did ask my granddaughter if she would like to do this before any moves and she decided who she wanted to invite to the "planning".
  • We set up a budget so they would not go overboard with planned events.
  • The first planning session took place 4 weeks before the event and the girls met in a food court at one of our malls.
  • Everything that took place during the sessions was "dutch" so girls only ordered what they wanted to pay for (important as these sessions could get costly).
  • The 6 girls (only the girls) discussed what day it would be held (her birthday was on a school day) and what was available on what days.
  • They spent several hours walking and talking and decided to meet again the following week.
  • They finally decided on a movie/pizza/1 hour game emporium/ice cream and no cake.
  • She said it was the "best" and that they actually enjoyed the planning sessions almost as much as the party.

Teens are all different and what is fun for one is boring to another.

I hope you also have fun with your daughter's birthday as these are your memories too.

Just remember, unless you have unlimited resources, a budget is really necessary because this sort of thing can get out of hand quickly.

You may still go over the planned budget but you may be able to see it coming and maybe have time to pull back a little.
