You don't mention the fabric, but most times the process to bleach a color shirt doesn't end up with a consistent white and you end up with a lighter original color and white splotches. Google the brand and see if they make it in white, if you love the style but not the color.

There is a simple solution to your problem. You can actually bleach and dye this skirt white. Here is how you'll do it:

  1. In a large pan fill it with water and add your bleach. It must be diluted and not straight bleach.

  3. Make sure you get a big enough bucket so that you can submerge the skirt all the way in and it can be moved around freely.
  4. Let this soak in the mixture for several hours. Check on it and turn the garment around. You might need to weight the garment down in order to get it to soak in the water.
  5. When you have most of the color removed, wash the garment.
  6. Now buy a box of white dye and follow the instructions on the box. You can dye this skirt white if you first remove the pink from the skirt.
  7. Just check the label on the garment to make sure you won't damage the garment if you bleach and dye it again.

I would not risk it. It will never be pure white

Occasionally you can bleach an all cotton item successfully but bleaching (such as instructions given) will damage/weaken the material and sometimes when you wash the garment it will have small holes (maybe the second or third wash).

  • Bleach is known to weaken fabric and that is the reason it should always be used with caution and generally in small amounts. A bleach alternative is usually recommended for laundry.
  • If you still decide to try the posted solution you should be aware that it may not turn out as you wished and may have to be dyed another color or turn it into a rag.
  • If your skirt has any fabric content other than cotton, then bleach is not a good product to use.
  • There are some products that "say" color remover and some work some of the time but may be a better choice than bleach.

If you look in the Rit Dye section in your local grocery store, you'll find color remover. i'd try that before I'd use bleach - to much chance of ruining your blouse with bleach.

this would work best with a more natural fabric

the danger is in streaking which is the same danger that you would get if dyeing it.

when you have a fabric that will bunch up and wrinkle up in places and accept too much bleach and not enough in others, it will pretty much always come out streaky.

It's the raison d'etre of tie dyes
