Bunch of Newspaper Roses - vase filled with roses and pom pomsIf you love flowers, but can't afford the real McCoy, then these DIY flowers are just what you need. Turn newspapers and pompoms into flowers. Displayed in a suitable glass vase, you will have flowers in your house that will last a long time, without breaking the bank in the process. You can make as many roses as you want!

Total Time: afternoon project

Yield: three roses and five pompom flowers

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. First make the centre of the flower:
    a. Use the lid to trace two circles on to the newspaper, and cut them out.
    b. Crumple up the one circle and put it on top of the second circle.
    c. Add glue all around the crumpled circle.
    d. Fold the second circle over the crumpled-up one.
    e. Add to the bamboo skewer and secure with floral tape.
  2. Bunch of Newspaper Roses - trace and cut out two circles, crumple one
     
    Bunch of Newspaper Roses - fold second circle around the crumpled one and attach to skewer with floral tape
     
  3. Now make the first rose:
    a. Trace and cut 15 hearts from the newspaper - these will be the rose petals.
    b. Fold the bottom part of each petal around the top of a skewer.
    c. Secure the bottom point of each heart to the skewer, using the floral tape.
    d. Continue until all the rose petals have been secured.
    e. Cover the whole skewer with floral tape, so that the rose will have a green stem.

  5. Lightly spray the top of the petals with a quick coat of bronze ink glimmer mist, and allow to dry thoroughly. Gently fold the petals of the rose open.

  7. Make two more roses in the same way.
  8. Now make a pompom flower:
    a. Use the pliers to cut five pieces of florist wire, each with a length of 10".
    b. Use the sharp end of fourth skewer to make a small opening in a pompom.
    c. Add a drop of glue to the one end of a piece of wire.
    d. Push the wire into the opening made into the pompom. Allow to dry thoroughly.
    e. Cover the whole wire with floral tape, so that the pompom flower will have a green stem.
    f. Repeat with the other four pompoms, so that you will have five pompom flowers.
  9. Bunch of Newspaper Roses - pom pom glued to wire

  10. Arrange the flowers in a suitable glass vase.
