Coloring Royal and Buttercream Icing

I love to make my own icings, but when I make royal icing or buttercream icing and color it the icing become too runny to work with. I am using gel food coloring because I had thought the liquid coloring I was using was making it that way. Now it is doing that no matter what food coloring I use.

I use a box of 10x sugar and a stick of butter, you can cut down on the butter.....
