The finished painted buffet.Bought this vintage buffet for $60. I wanted to try out a different type of "distressed" paint look and found this interesting method called "Dry Paint Distressing".

There are YouTube videos to show you how to refinish furniture. The main purpose of this craft is to show a dry brush paint technique.

Steps:

  1. Remove hardware. Using paint remover and following directions on can apply to furniture and use a putty knife to remove paint from furniture. Wipe residue with rag. Using a sander, sand surfaces of furniture to remove any remaining paint and varnish residue or sand by hand. Use steel wool for curved parts of furniture or in ridges to remove paint.

  3. For the dry paint distressing, use a paintbrush. Dip very edge of paint brush into paint and wipe excess on paper towel. Using broad, long strokes, start at one end of top of dresser or piece of furniture and brush all the way to the other end. Repeat until the entire top surface has been painted. You will need to do this at least two times, letting the coats of paint dry inbetween.
  4. Adding paint to the buffet.

    Dry painting the sanded buffet.

  5. Using a spray varnish, spray the entire surface and allow to dry. I like to use spray varnish because it doesn't yellow and leaves a light coat of varnish to protect the painted surface. Clean hardware with steel wool land and replace onto furniture piece.

This is just another type of painting technique that I wanted to experiment with. I was trying to have the technique match the new couch I just purchased. I also have a lot of brown furniture in the room where the couch and buffet are located, so the brown showing through the paint helps to tie it into the color scheme better.
