Easy Oven-Baked Swiss Steak

  • 1 1/2 lb. beef round steak, cut 3/4 inch thick
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening or oil
  • 1 can tomatoes (16oz.), cut up
  • 1/2 cup celery, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup carrots, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

Cut round steak into 6 serving size portions. In a bowl, combine flour and salt. With meat mallet, pound 1 tablespoon flour mixture into meat on each side. Brown meat on both sides. Transfer meat to a 12x7 inch baking dish. Blend in the remaining 2 tablespoons flour mixture into the pan when you browned the meat. Stir in the undrained tomatoes, celery, carrots and Worcestershire sauce. Cook and stir until thick. Pour over meat in baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees F for 1 hour 20 minutes, or until done.
