House Training a New Puppy

House Training a New Puppy

We just got a lab/pit mix, 9 week old puppy. She doesn't let us sleep at night. We keep her in her cage so that she won't pee in the apartment. We are having a hard time potty training her. If she doesn't learn by the end of the month we will have to give her up. Can anyone help me?

There is a lot of information archived below. I hope some of it will be helpful for you, because there is only one week left in this month. I haven't had to train a puppy in ages, but that seems like a short time to me. Best of luck. (03/23/2010)

House Training a New Puppy

A nine-week old puppy needs to go outside to pee every 2 hours. The formula is an hour for every month of age. You cannot expect a baby this young to be house trained already. You need to take her outside every 2 hours, then praise her when she potties outside. Do not keep her in a crate for hours at a time and expect her to not potty in it. She is a baby. You should not have her if you don't have the time to do it right. Think about it, and don't get a dog if you don't have the time. It's wrong and unkind. (03/24/2010)
