I had an old stained table cloth on my little table and it had to go. I had 5 each of yellow and blue (my kitchen colors) doilies. I sat at the table and put them together. I think it turned out great.

Total Time: 1.5 hours

Yield: 1

  • 10 doilies ($15.00)
  • scissors ($0.00)
  • 2-3 ft matching color crochet thread ($.05)
  • 1.5 yd clear plastic sheeting ($4.97)

I ended up not needing a crochet hook.

  1. Turn your doilies upside down. Trim off the tags as close as you can.
  2. Aligning the doilies to meet the tips of each other, cut a 3" piece of crochet thread and tie them with a double knot. Trim them.
  3. When you have the 10 done in sets of 2, lay them in a strip altering the colors. Then nestle one of the side tips between the opposite side tips and tie the same way. Turn them right side up.
  4. Cut the plastic sheeting to cover the table. I didn't want mine to hang down much, but you might want yours too. I find that having the material in front of you when you are trying to sit is cumbersome. Put your things back on the table and you are done.

NOTE: I found out the hard way that hot things will warp thin plastic. Even if you use double the mil, it might still. So, I now use a crocheted coaster and a quilted place mat. Even then I won't do anything really hot. Good to know.

If you don't want to have yours look not so unique, you can do this using thrift store doilies too. This way they are all different.

Here's some inspiration!!
