Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - closeup of gren yarn octopusI have been trying to make handmade toys for my 9 month old son. So I was thinking of felt plush toys, but I found out something easier and I don't have to be knitting and sewing the materials together.

Supplies:

Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - supplies
 

Steps:

  1. Wrap the yarn around the book in vertical position.
  2. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - wrapping yarn around the book
     
  3. Make a very thick layer.
  4. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - thick amount of yarn wrapped around the book
     
  5. Tie the center of the whole thick roll of yarn very tightly.
  6. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - wrap a piece of yarn around the yarn on your book
     
    Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - tie a tight knot
     
  7. Remove the roll from the book.
  8. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - tie the yarn

  9. Cut the bottom parallel to the tie. See photo.
  10. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - cut yarn opposite the tied spot
     
  11. Take a piece of paper and crumple it to form a ball.
  12. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - crushed paper ball
     
  13. Place it under the tied portion.
  14. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - placing ball of paper in the yarn
     
  15. Cover the whole paper ball with yarn.
  16. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - cover paper ball completely with the yarn
     
  17. Tie the bottom of the ball to secure it inside. Make sure it's completely covered with yarn. This will be the head.

  19. Divide the untied portion of the yarn into 8 sections to make tentacles.

  21. Now take one part and tie in braids. Secure the tips.
  22. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - braiding tentacles
     
  23. Do the same with the other 7 parts.

  25. Take two small buttons and glue onto the head. See note below.
  26. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - glue on eyes
     
  27. Cut a different color of yarn about one inch and then form a smile on its face. Glue in place.
  28. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - add a yarn mouth

  29. Tie a bow under the head.
  30. Mr. Octopus Made of Yarn - finished octopus with ribbon bow below its head
     

Caution: Be careful with the buttons. Remove them if you wish to hand the stuff to babies. Buttons are choking hazard so as much as possible just tie the toy on crib rattle stands for them to look at. At least they will not be putting it on their mouths.
