Predator Proofing a Chicken Coop

finished coopThere are numerous predators in our neighborhood that could easily dig under the edges of our coop. This is how we addressed that issue.

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Measure an area bigger than the coop and dig down about 3 to 4 inches.
  2. dig hole for blocks
     
  3. Lay out pavers to determine the best arrangement.
  4. test fit blocks
     
  5. Fill your hole with sand and compact it with a tamper. The sand will be used to help level your pavers.

  7. Begin building your block form on the sand, leveling each block as you go.

  9. Add sand around the inside and outside edges to stabilize the blocks. Use a tamper to compact the sand.

  11. Fill the middle of the pavers with sand and compact. Then using a 2x4 and broom, remove excess sand.

  13. Cut a piece of hardware cloth, big enough to overhang the pavers.

  15. Begin adding the second layer of pavers, sandwiching the hardware cloth in between.

  17. Bend the edges of the hardware cloth down towards the ground.

  19. Add dirt around the edges to bury the hardware cloth.

  21. Assemble the coop on the block frame. Now you can have the piece of mind that your chickens are safe while in their coop.
