Pumpkins Turning Orange Early?

August 13, 2007

My pumpkins have already turned orange. Will they last if I leave them on the vine until Halloween, or will they rot before then? I don't want to pick them yet, as the whole reason I planted them was for Halloween. Thanks!

OK RELAX!
As long as your VINE is healthy the pumpkins are FINE! If the vine breaks the pumpkin looses its food source. They are STILL GROWING!
Mine are the same and have been for a few weeks and they are still getting BIGGER!

The same thing happened to me last year. I left them alone (it was really hard!) and they made it. I think that as long as they're kept dryish so they can't rot, they'll be fine. You could prop them up on something so they're up off the ground a bit. I'm trying to think of something that would work, but I'm drawing a blank. Maybe a pallet of some kind? Just make sure they stay on the stem and dry. I hope it works!

Fall fairs are starting soon in a lot of places. They always have pumpkin judging contests, and theirs are always fully orange. I really don't think it's too early for them to turn.

Another thing is, my grandson gave my husband a Get Better Pumpkin the middle of Sept a few years ago when he had a heart attack. It was fine until the following April before it got soft. Plenty of time!
