Removing Paper Stuck to a Wood Table?

I have an untreated maple butcher block table that wet paper towels bonded with/ sunk into, and I cannot get it off with anything too strong because it is a food prep surface. I tried salt and vinegar, and they aren't working.

We had a label stuck to a table that my hubby removed by leaving a very thin coating of Murphy Oil soap on the label. It came right off after about 10 minutes. I don't like the smell, but it made the table look shiny and got rid of the melted on sticker. Hope this works for you!

Be sure to wash it off well before using it for food.

Cover with a thin layer of olive oil and let it sit a half hour. Carefully start peeling off from a corner.

I removed scraps of paper that had bonded to an antique wooden table that had its original matte finish. First I saturated the paper with mineral oil, and left it soak in for several days. The paper still would not rub off. I left it alone for a week, then, I successfully removed the paper without harming the wood, by rubbing the scraps of paper with a damp, white ribbed cotton dishrag.( These are commonly sold in bundles as bar mops at Walmart and large grocery stores.) I rubbed the spots of paper from different angles, up and down, crosswise, etc., checking my white cloth for flakes of residue being removed, which was a clue as to the most successful angle of attack.

The ribbing on the dishrag provided enough roughness to lift the paper residue. For small, resistant spots of paper, I put my index finger in one layer of dishrag to concentrate my rubbing at those wee spots. All the scraps of paper rubbed off, except for a couple small ones which I had overlooked when applying the mineral oil. It was evident that the paper had to be soaked in oil before the damp dishrag treatment would work.
