To keep new shoes from being too slippery take sandpaper and rough up the bottoms. If you don't have sandpaper rub them against rocks, bricks, or concrete.

This is a great tip! I always do this especially with dress shoes or when I'm a bridesmaid (last thing you need is to slip on the dance floor in front of everybody!).
