Hammers usually have a claw on the other side to be used for pulling nails out. This is a page about using a hammer claw to remove nails..

For all the moves I have made, it took me a while to remember to share this tip. When you take out your nails, face the claw up. This might be a bit harder if they are up high (mine was high but there was no room around the toilet to set up a step stool) and you don't want the nails to fall.

This shot isn't straight up but I wanted you to see the photo with the nail in the wall and the claw.

This keeps them in the claw until you can lower the hammer and take them out. Hope that helps!

Did you know if you put a small piece of wood in front of the nail and then use the hammer to remove the nail. it works better. You have more leverage to remove the nail. Try this with your idea and see how much faster you can remove your nails.

For those hard to pull out nails when leverage is needed, the small piece of wood in front of the nail prevents putting a divet into the wall or wood that the nail is coming out of.
