Folks, as I read the letters from people frustrated over caterpillars in their gardens and then scrolled down to other articles about butterflies I was reminded how shortsighted the 'death-to-all-caterpillars' attitude is.
Yes, they eat your plants, but very seldom do they kill them. The leaves will grow back once they've eaten what they need to turn into beautiful butterflies or moths. I put in specific plants as a food source for their larvae.
Think before you poison. We're killing ourselves by destroying so many pollinators. Think of the bees and colony collapse disorder. No pollinators equals no food for us.

I have a beautiful red leafed shrub and the little caterpillars ate every leaf a few weeks ago. As time passed it started to recover and now they're back! I've taken to tapping/shaking the plant to dislodging them, then sweeping them up very gently (I tried picking them up by hand but there were hundreds) and moving them far away.
When asked about our fate on this ship, some of our security officials will tell you they are far more concerned about someone coming up with the means to destroy all pollinators, than they are about world war three.
Everything has a right to live.
Glad I'm not the only one carting a bucket load of slugs, snails caterpillars etc. to a new home!
