Bulgarian Chicken


  • 3 cups coarsely chopped cabbage
  • 1 can sauerkraut (1lb.)
  • 1/2 cup uncooked regular rice
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 Tbsp. cooking oil
  • Ad

  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 can tomatoes (1lb.)
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. caraway seed
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 1 broiler fryer, cut in pieces


Place cabbage in bottom of 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with sauerkraut, then rice. Pour water over mixture. Heat oil in skillet over medium heat, add onion and saute' 6 minutes or until tender.

Add sauteed onion to baking dish; add tomatoes. Sprinkle brown sugar, caraway seed, salt and pepper over tomatoes. Place chicken, skin side up, on top layers.

Bake at 375 degrees F. until chicken is tender and golden brown, about 1 hour 35 minutes.
