How do I repaint a wooden ball that is on the top of a stair post? This is a honey-do that would make a great Xmas gift. Please help!

Unless somebody has a more professional way of doing it, I would just take a brush and paint and paint it.
You don't include enough info. Is it varnished now? If it is, you will have to sand and then prime before you paint with anything.
