Christmas Cranberry Torte


  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups flour, sifted
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • Ad

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 cup dates, chopped
  • 1 cup whole raw cranberries
  • grated rind of 2 oranges
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup orange juice


Thoroughly cream sugar and shortening. Sift flour with salt, baking powder and soda. Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Add nuts, dates, cranberries, and orange rind. Bake in a greased tube pan at 350 degrees F for 1 hour or until cake tests done with a tester. Combine sugar and orange juice. Pour over cake while it is still warm. Let stand 24 hours. Serve with whipped cream. Serves 12-16.
