Removing Cloudy Stain From Purell On Wood?

I used Purell hand santitizer to remove permanent marker stains from an oak table (I have used Purell before without problems). The marker stains are gone but it left a cloudy white stain on the table. I have tried baking soda, toothpaste and paper towels with a iron. Please help!

Sounds like the alcohol in the purell ate into the finish thats on the wood. The only solution that I know of is to sand down and refinish.

I just used SOS pad and it works without any damage to my floor. I then used a wet cloth to remove the residue from SOS pad and then my normal floor cleaner.

Try rubbing the spot with white toothpaste. Let set for about 20 minutes, then buff with a soft cloth. This method has worked to remove white cloudy spots from my dining room table caused by sitting a hot plate directly on the table.

It can't hurt.

This worked! Rubbed in toothpaste, waited a bit, then buffed out. Finish looked dry after, a little old English and its good to go.

I tried your suggestion to use white toothpaste to remove the stain but didn't work on hand sanitizer stands on wood. I also tried baking soda with a little vinegar but it also didn't remove the stain. I can't sand the refinish the wood so I am still researching another solution that is less drastic. Anyone have any other ideas?

Did you find anything that worked?

Thank you so much! This worked so perfectly for our wooden laminated doors. I was panicking when I got the stain from sanitising the door handle and this hack has made the stain just vanish!

Hi PG1208,
What was the hack you used to removed the sanitizer stain on the wood door? I have a stain from sanitizer on my wood floor.
Thanks,

Remove white stains on wood from alcohol based hand sanitizer spills: One teaspoon vegetable oil mixed with 1/4 cup cold water left soaking on wood table 15 minutes miracously got rid of the white stains on my very nice wooden kitchen table from spilled hand sanitizer. I really lucked out just as a last ditch effort, I applied it within 10 minutes after the hand sanitizer spill ( after first trying soap and water and then Bona hard wood floor spray which did nothing) . I had a cleaning team drop hand sanitzer on my wooden floor in an attempt to clean the sticky floor. The sanitizer left large white marks on the wood floor all over the living room.

I read on the forums to try Mayo and it worked!! So well in fact that you couldnt tell the marks were there - and there were many of them.

What I did:

I took Mayo (Hellmans!) and applied it to each spot on the floor individually. I then let it sit until the Mayo turned color a bit (about 10 mins) and then took a clean white tshirt and rubbed over and around the marks. The floor of course became greasy (which can be handled seperately) but it became clean.

Be careful, its easy to skid on the floor after its that greast!

Hope this helps.

Try infusing some tea bags in a bowl of hot water- til it's as close to the colour of the table as possible- allow to cool. Then with a cloth-dip into the tea solution and rub over the mark. It MAY blend the mark in with the rest of the table that way.

If you are unsure to begin with try a test piece under the table where no one can see.
I am told this is a good way to cover up stains on wood.
Good luck

A sos pad works great

it certainly sounds like something, probably the alcohol in the purell removed the stain from the wood. You can purchase pens of wood stain at paint stores that are meant to be used to correct such problems,if it is solid wood not plastic veneer over fiberboard.

Also if you can match the color, try permanent marker and wax used for wood, but the stain touchup marker pen would be better, I think.

try mayonaise. Let stand a short while then wipe off with a clean cloth. It worked on a water stain for me.

I live in an apartment building. During the lockdown, one of the maintenance personnel who knows that I have a damaged immune system decided to help by wiping my wooden entry door with a product containing bleach. After two weeks of trying different products to remove the damage I finally remembered about using mayonaise. It worked with just a bit of rubbing!

Didn't have any mayonnaise, so thought I'd try some "Miracle" Whip just for grins. It worked! And we also learned a valuable lesson, keep the Purell high on the shelf, away from the grandkids.

Just use baby wipes

No, no baby wipes, please. Someone was cleaning my husbands side table with baby wipes, it left a cloudy mess on the table and stripped the shine. I wiped and rubbed the table a few times with Old English scratch cover and it worked perfectly. Shiny top table.
