GFCI Keeps Tripping?

A friend has a GFCI outlet located directly below her main panel; mind you nowhere near water. She has her Christmas lights on the outside of the house, now the lights are plugged into an outside outlet that is in perfect shape, but they keep going out. If she goes and resets the the gfci the lights go back on. Sometimes they stay on for a whole day, some days she can't keep them on. Now mind you there is nothing plugged into the GFCI outlet and no breakers trip. I'm at a complete lost. Any help please.
