Fresh Coconut Has Chemical Smell?

Does anyone know why a coconut would smell something like a cleaning product when it is opened? I recently bought one. It is full of milk and white meat, but smells chemically.

From what I have read if it smells like alcohol or looks yellow it is bad. Read up on this post that I came across. I am wondering if this is what you are experiencing. Hope this helps you out. I would be demanding a refund. Lol. :)

Sound to me like someone used too much or too strong of a pesticide on it. Some coconuts are grown only for making shampoos & cleaning products from & are not for eating! Maybe someone accidentally got one of these mixed up with the "eatable" ones!

* Years back, when I was a teenager, I told my mom the meat she bought at the Safeway grocery store & served for dinner tasted like chemicals & she didn't believe me (because I've always hated meat & now I'm a vegetarian). But, fortunately she worked for Safeway in the meat department & the next day when she went in to work she found out that they had sealed the floors in the meat warehouse the day before & that there had been many other calls complaining about the strange chemical taste & smell in their meat. Apparently it was from the fumes from the floor sealer! So trustyour taste buds & your nose!

Agree with the poster who already said to take that coconut back to where it came from. It's either gone bad, or was sitting on the delivery truck or the stockroom exposed to some type of chemical spill.

If it doesn't pass the sniff test, doesn't pass your lips :)

Take it back, either sprayed with too much pesticide or is rotten.

I wouldn't eat it but look on the package and see if the product contains sulfates or sulfites to preserve the color. Many products contain these. I do not eat them because they can cause allergic reactions.

Like everyone says here do NOT eat it, also call the store manager and have them remove it, if they refuse call the health department others may not be so savvy and could be sick or die. If one drills or poke the top first by the face or point of the coconut you should only smell sweet beautiful coconut aroma, not purtid, acid nor chemical smell.

I recently purchased a coconut from The Fountain Mesa Ridge Safeway and when we cracked it open tonight it definitely had a different smell. When we tasted it it tasted like some sort of cleaner or solvent. I called the night manager to let her know and she said they have not been advised to pull them from the Shelf.

I would advise people not to purchase them as they seem to have been exposed to something. The coconut had plenty of milk and the meat was still white in color.

I just opened a coconut from Walmart in southern Alabama and it also smells like soap or chemicals. Very weird.

I had the EXACT SAME THING happen to me just now. Drilled a hole in the top to get the water inside first and was surprised when it took no actual drilling, just a poke from the bit. Drained the water then cracked it open with a hammer. The shell literally FELL OFF the meat, which was clean and white, not slimy, no yellowing at all.

But the "chemically" stench was undeniable. I rinsed it in water and cut a small slice from the inner meat only to taste chemical. Will be returning it to the store tomorrow.

Same as the others. Coconut from Kroger or Wally (can't remember) and it came away from the shell very easily. Was very oil and almost gelatinous on the outside. Bright white, no horrible smells. But the taste...UGH....

I LOVE coconut but this was like being a kid again and sucking on a bar of soap for uttering an expletive! It was bloody awful. So here I am, Googling...soapy coconuts and trying to figure WTF is going on.

I purchased a full raw coconut shell and all intact from a ShopRite in Newark de . My son and husband love fresh coconut water and I love the meat. Husband is from Honduras and he knows all about coconut and how to open and test them first site was fine. Opening meat white hard , a lot of water but it was a yellowish and a little off flavor . I ate a chunk from the top and was fine cut the bottom off and ate a piece that yes taste like Lysol 409 kind of . I was very sick throwing up everything I put in my body until all the coconut was out. Every 2 hour's into a bucket .I couldn't even get to the bathroom I was so weak and I slept for 24 hours . My urine was so dark and smell so strong.
