If you have a patio umbrella, weave a string as parallel as possible between the tips. It's no good for large sheets, but works well for the slow drying stuff like socks or jeans.

I put up five shower rods across my tub (lengthwise). They are up high enough not to keep me from using the tub, but are a blessing to hang clothes on in the house. Of course you have to coordinate activities using the tub when you have wet laundry. Often they are dry enough that if you need to use the tub you can then hang them on hangers and put other places in the house to finish drying.
