RE: Surviving Parvo
I have a 1.5 year old Rottweiler Little Man, he got sick on Monday morning and threw up after drinking water. Later he had brown smelly water for stool. I was off of work on vacation so luckily I could check on him, he was just laying around and didn't want to move.
I put his leash on him and took him to the vet. It was like he knew I was getting him better, he was laying on the bed and jumped off soon as I put his leash on, he barely made it to the car, but he sure did jump in to go to the Dr. He was so so sick. Once we got to the dr, he was weighed and from there he had given in, he couldn't walk, the tech and I carried him to the exam room where they took his temp and was 105, then they kept him and called me later to tell me it was hookworms.
They were keeping him overnight because he was severely dehydrated and vomiting still so they put him on antibiotics and fluids. I went to visit him on Tuesday as he still didn't get to come home. Wednesday morning the vet called me and asked if they could do an x-ray in case he had a blockage because he was not getting better. I agreed and she called me 30 min later to tell me he had Parvo. I was so upset, it was all my fault. She said they already were doing the right thing, they just had to add an additional antibiotic.
I was concerned about the money as like everyone else, I am a working person and don't really account for these things. They said they would help me out and do a payment plan. I also had to take my other two dogs in to get shots to make sure that they didn't get it also. This was another $100 when I left on Wednesday afternoon, it was an $800 bill, I was able to pay some on it. Luckily. I'm not sure if my Little Man is getting better. He is responsive, and they say that he is getting up now instead of them having to move him around and stretch him.
They did another blood test yesterday and it was good, his white cell count is up and they vet said this morning that he drank water last night. He still won't eat though but so far everyone has been pretty positive, but said that we aren't out of the woods yet. I talked to another tech this afternoon that came in to give him his meds and called to let me know how he is, and he wasn't quite as positive.
They are saying that he isn't worse, but he isn't better either. I'm not sure what this is a sign of. I have asked to see him if there is anyway at all, as I feel like seeing me and my husband he will get better knowing we love him and didn't just take him in there and leave him. But they won't let us for fear of spreading it. I just want some encouragement to know that maybe he will be okay, it seems most everyone in here that have survivors pulled them out themselves.
The tech also said that Monday I need to sit down with the vet and see what the next stage is. I feel like he is getting better though it is very slow, but he is doing a little every day. I just didn't feel very encouraged by this tech and am looking for someone that may have went through this same ordeal, possibly even with an older puppy like mine and a Rottweiler, as I know the Rotties don't have a great chance with Parvo.

RE: Surviving Parvo
Today is Monday and on last Thursday I started noticing that my lil bella was acting weird. She wasn't running around or playing. I noticed that she wouldn't eat so I tried giving her some turkey lunch meat which she loves and she wouldn't touch it. I knew right then and there that something was wrong. Then on Friday she still wouldn't eat. So I tried calling the vet that was in our town and they said they wouldn't see her til Monday! So then on Saturday she got worse! She started throwing up! She threw up 5 times in 20 minutes!
So then we took her to the emergency vet and they confirmed that it was parvo and that she was "highly infected" and that she had a 20% chance of dying with the treatment! They said that she would have to stay for 72 hours minimum and that the estimate was 934 dollars to 1800! And they said that it was just the minimum estimate and that it could cost a lot more! We honestly did not care about the price! We just wanted to make her better! So they took her to the isolation on Saturday and believe me, I have called that hospital so many times checking on her! And i am so happy to say that today (Monday) I called the vet and they said that she is doing extremely well and she stopped throwing up and having diarrhea and that if she keeps the bland food down that she will be coming home early! I was so relieved! My lil girl is a fighter and i am so proud of her for fighting this is 2 days! I can't wait to go and get her from the vet today!
So yes there is a great chance of dogs surviving this! And I am sorry for all the loss of the people from the other comments! When I read through them yesterday I was crying! Hoping that my bella would be okay! Thank god! Prayers do work!

My puppy Nullah got parvo and he has bloody diarrhea it hurts so bad seeing him like that; vomiting and very weak. It's his 2nd day today, and still very weak and dehydrated. I hope and pray he survives. I'm crying buckets right now just thinking about it.

RE: Surviving Parvo
We just bought a 6 week old great dane puppy. He is now 8 weeks. Today Is Sunday. Last Tuesday we noticed him having bad diarrhea. It was night time so I had some pedialyte and pepto. I woke up every 2 hours giving him pepto and pedialyte. Thank goodness he was still wanting to eat and drink on his own. That morning he was really bad he didn't even want to get up. I took him to the vet and they told me he had parvo. He has been at the vet since Wed. and they tell me everyday there's no change. Not getting any worse, not getting any better. Well its sun. and they have called to say that he is getting worse. They don't know if hell make it or not. They say it is hard to say with parvo. That they'll let me know. So I'm here waiting an praying. I hate this!! I wish that they would let me see him. Nov visitors allowed in isolation. I'll post again and let everyone know. Hopefully he will make it. Hang in there Samson! We love you!

RE: Surviving Parvo
I only had my puppy Amber who was a 2 month old, 2lb teacup poodle for two days, the first day i got her she was energetic and running all around, and the next she was lifeless and vomiting a lot. we brought her to the vet and she was positive for parvo, my heart sunk because I had just recently lost one of my puppies to hookworms, and I didnt want to go though another loss. So i gave her pedialyte, baby food and small doses of pepto. after staying up all night with her, she improved the next day and was drinking more. the day after she became worse, she had diarrhea, vomiting, and she looked over exhausted. so we brought her to the vet and the parvo had gotten worse, they said the chances were 50/50, but they weren't certain because she was so small.
after about a week we found out that she pulled through and was able to come home. they put IV's in both of her front legs, and had to feed her through a tube. the vet told me she was the strongest little pup he had ever seen, now shes home and bossing all of our other dogs around, and happier then ever, all you need is to bring them to the vet, a lot of patience and strong prayer. Here's Amber today 4 months, happy as could be with my other dog Angel, who she has bonded with and follows around everywhere

RE: Surviving Parvo
I can understand it can be a terrible moment that one goes trough to see our dogs in such a painful situation, but there is a HOPE if something is done! Unfortunately, two of my dogs got Parvo in the same week. First it was Munini. She was sad, vomiting, and had bloody diarrhea. My husband took her to vet (Thursday) and there they told us that she had Parvo and we had two options: take her home or leave her there. Since we did not have the estimate they were asking for and he could not apply for a credit payment plan. He decided to bring her home with what the vet had told him to do.
By this time Munini was just getting worse. We gave her Pedialyte ever hour, we gave her antibiotics, we also put syrup in her jaws, but unfortunately 12 hours later she did not make it. We are still really sad for her lost.
The next day we took lily, my other pup to my mom's house. She was doing great and just wagging her tail and jumping everywhere. However, the next morning (Sunday) she called me early in the morning and told me that she had vomit and was sad too. Since, Parvo is very contiguous and I did not want to lose any time.
I decided to take her the Vet Emergency hospital because all the clinics were close in my town and the ones nearby too. Yet, my dad went with me because he was going to apply for the credit payment plan. Lily had Parvo too and the vet told us the same thing the other vet told us "she had a 50/50 chance".
My dad and I said we wanted to leave her there and get all the treatment she needed. There was no way we wanted to go through another death that same week. Neither did I wanted to take the medication home and do it myself. I prefer leaving her there!
Don't take me wrong! I have heard that giving medication home is also good and effective. I just felt that being in the vet was the best option for lily and I had the means (trough my dad). I pick her up the next morning with some medication. She was doing much better.
When we got home we keep her warm because she was still weak. Six hours later she was just wagging her tail and jumping too. She began to bark and ran as well. She was Lily again! I'm so thank-ful to God that she made it through and is alive. I'm still giving her medication but she is doing great. Lily is the one on the left and Munini was the one on the right.

I was just getting off work an I usually put my brown in the back yard till I get back. Once I got home an open the door he wouldn't run up to me like he usually does everyday he just looked at me. So I thought maybe he didn't want to come in so after I carried him in he just would lay down, he would get up so slow.
I ignored it until I offer him some meat an he wouldn't eat it. No water no nothing. So at that time I started to worry cause he kept laying down an brown is always every where. But he start throwing up an bleeding from the behind, and it smelt horrible. He got worse so I couldn't take it. I took him to the vet an she said he wouldn't make it without the IV but I had no money for that so she gave me flagyl an reaglan. I gave those to him while forcing him to drink Gatorade every hour.
By the grace of god about two days I saw improvement by the third day he was eating a little and drinking on his own.the forth day was awesome cause he went right back to being brown..so keep faith cause your dog can survive parvo with out the IV.

My puppy just recently had parvo! It was the most sad thing I ever saw. I knew about parvo but I didn't know that it was as bad as it is. I have an all white Husky named Koda. He was the most playful puppy I had ever seen and he would howl like crazy and he loved everyone and always wanted attention. About a month ago, I started noticing him getting kind of weird. He wouldn't jump on my husband and I when we walked in the house from work and he wouldn't play as much. We just thought maybe he doesn't feel good or maybe he has something stuck in his tummy because Koda liked to chew up his toys and swallow them!
But day after day he would act more weird. I started noticing that he was not eating or drinking even when we offered it to him. Well one morning I woke up to go check on him while my husband was getting ready for work and I walked in my kitchen and there was bloody stool all over my kitchen floor and I just knew something was really wrong with him. So I called the vet and told her what was going on and how he was acting. And he was so weak, that when I tried to pick him up he looked at me and just feel over and I thought he passed out or something but he couldn't even stand.
So I ran around my apartment trying to find someone to help me pick him up and put him in my jeep. And by this time it was hard to drive, I was so upset and crying my eyes out! Then, we got to the vet and they had to rush him straight back in the clinic and run test and stuff on him while I waiting (pasing back and forth in the examination room). The doctor came in and told me that he had a 105.8 temp. and they were getting ready to test him for parvo. She came back in the room and told me that he was one sick puppy and that he had parvo.
Now Koda is my baby! He gets everything he wants and he is spoiled rotten! When the doctor told me that he had parvo, my knees literally hit the floor and I just started sobbing! But at that moment I was so mad at myself. I kept saying this is all my fault I'm such a bad mom and on and on and on. Finally I calmed down just a little and they let me go back to see my baby boy back in the isolation room.
I sat with him and held his paw and started praying, really hard! He was so sick and I felt so bad because I couldn't do anything else to help him! They had him on IV drips and all different kinds of treatments. After being in the clinic for 8 days and after only having a less than 20% chance of making it, I got to bring my little boy home! He was still pretty weak when i first brought him home.
It has been 15 days since he has been home and now he is the same Koda bear! He is playing, jumping around, and eating on his own again! Even though in the beginning, I thought that howl that he use to do was so annoying, but when I heard it for the first time after he got home, I was so grateful for that howl and I don't think it could ever get annoying ever again!
I am so grateful for all the people who helped keep my Koda bear alive! They were a great blessing to my family and I but most of all to Koda! And this weekend, we will be celebrating our Koda bear's 1st birthday thanks to all those vets who help us! God does really love all his creatures even little puppies! I thank god everyday that my boy is ok and that he is home safe! God is great and I had faith that Koda would be taken care of.
IF anyone needs any advice or wants to know anything about parvo or would just like to comment on my story you can contact me at Brittney.Wilson AT miamijacobs.edu or at Fhsnumba1cutie08 AT aol.com. Thank you! ~Brittney

RE: Surviving Parvo
My puppy chico is only 1 month and 10 days old. I have only had him for 11 days and he seemed fine at first. six days after i got him, I noticed that he didn't want to eat and was vomiting and had diarrhea. At first I didn't know what was wrong because i didn't know about parvo. I kept him on pedialyte for a two days because it was the weekend and my vets office was closed. He got sick on Saturday morning and I couldn't wait till Monday so I took him on Sunday night by calling in an Emergency. At first my vet didn't really give me much hope since my baby was already weak but I decided to leave her there and give it a try. He was on IVs and with antibiotics in the vet's clinic. Fortunately the vet allowed for visits and the second day we went, he noticed the dog was super hiper and trying to bite off the IVS he was surprised and told us he thought it would be better to take him home since he responded to us so well. He's been at home for three days now on medication and i still take him to the vets everyday to get his shot. He is doing great thanks to God. I've been praying and praying for him and I have faith that he will make it. OH and by the way he is so playful and eating well. we've seen a great improvement.

I adopted a Yorkie puppy from a friend a little over two weeks ago and I had her all but one day when she came down with Parvo. I refused to give up on her and 10 days later after intense aggressive treatment in a hospital, she pulled through. I am taking her home today. I appreciate the posted home remedies as I will need to continue focusing on her nutrition. Bless you all for not giving up!

Hi my name is Stacie and my puppies name is Jack. I have 3 other dogs and never knew anything about parvo. A friend of mine was moving and found this little guy wondering the roads, so I ended up with him. I got him on a Saturday and by Thursday he was vomiting, had a upset stomach and would not eat. Up until that Thursday he was the most playful puppy I had ever seen.
Friday morning I woke up to him using the restroom with blood in stool. I took him to vet and they started him on IV's and kept him until Monday morning and I called and they said he was good to go. Well today is Tuesday and he is acting fine but of course I'm still wondering if he will be okay. It is very heartbreaking when your baby is sick and I feel everyone's pain and I just hope that you get your little guy there in time to safe him because I now know how serious parvo is. Goodluck to everyone. staciemarie75 AT yahoo.com

A week after buying my dog from a breeder he acted sick. My dog weighed 4 pounds and was listless, vomiting and diarahea and stunk bad, I could literally smell the parvo.
I forced him to take every 2 hours. I gave my Prince:
Tamiflu - maybe you can find a herb for flu like symptoms - Every 4 hours
Amoxicillian - Perhaps an herb for antibiotics. Every 8 hours
Pedialyte - I gave as much as he would take with a syringe without a needle of course. I also tried a baby bottle but that was harder than the syringe. Must hydrate the dog every 2 hours.
Baby Cereal - after a few days again, every 2 hours.
You must be consistent, keep a schedule written down, and FORCE the dog no matter how hard it is. He will reject any handling.
If you cannot afford everything, at least force Pedialyte and/or something with electrolyes. I even woke myself up every 2 hours and gave the pedialyte.
Keep away from all other dogs, Bleach everything to kill the virus. I kept Prince in a crate, sometimes I brought him in bed with me but he wanted to be left alone, it was a stinky long and tough process but worth it in the end. Plus the power of prayer over my Prince I believed helped as well.
I hope this helps. DON'T GIVE UP! Force them to get hydrated. It takes about a good 3 to 4 days before you will notice a change depending on how severe. Parvo kills dogs from dehydration within 1 to 3 days after the symptoms occur.

RE: Surviving Parvo
We bought a long haired 2 month old chihuahua for our kids. After a week she had the signs of parvo, so I took her to the vet. Sure enough, our puppy came out positive. It is now 3 days later, and our puppy seems to be improving (Thank God!).
I am feeding her baby food (Beechnut or Gerber Chicken), mixed with chicken broth, and feeding her using a syringe. Plus, I am constantly feeding her with Gatorade (mixed with a little water) every 2 hours (using the syringe). Even though the puppy may fight it, you must force it. If not they will dehydrate. AGAIN - feed your puppy water or Gatorade EVERY 2 HOURS. Hopefully our puppy, Pixie, will make it, and hope yours do too!

I do not know how much more of this I can take! Our Milo started to look down and out this past Wednesday,we thought of it only as a cold. By Thursday night he was vomiting, or at least trying to every half hour. He is at the vets now... I'm going crazy! His name is Milo and is only 5 months old, its so hard to see this little 5 pound puppy hooked up to iv's its breaking my heart. The vets say that we can take him home once he stops vomiting. He has already attempted to eat, but still cannot keep anything down so they want to hook him up to another iv that will give him his vitamins. I just hope we are as lucky as some of you are and will be able to bring our Milo home soon.

Hi Everyone, We got our Chiuaua puppy through parvo after a week in intensive care ov IV's and tube feedings. Now the dog is fine and doing well, and has gained weight and eating alot. It wasn't cheap but he is worth it. I would suggest getting PARVAID as soon as possible and keep feeding with PediaLite to keep up the energy. PARVAID is avaiable on the web or at some pet stores. Go to Amber Technologies .com...or Wolf Creek Ranch .com to get help...Wolf Creek Ranch is great....
Also, the dog needs antibiotics to help fight the infection (Clavamox) is what my vet gave us, or you can get something from Amber Technologies. don't give up!

We lost one of our puppies 2 days ago and the second one starting acting a little strange on Friday. I did take her to the vet and he gave me antibiotics and anti nausea meds. He gave her shots as well. Unfortunately none of the vets here were willing to work out a payment plan with me so I am having to do it all on my own. She still will not eat anything but I am giving her pedialite and water from a syringe every 30 minutes to an hour. She is fighting me though and I feel bad for her. She doesn't feel so hot anymore and I am hoping that is a good sign. If she would eat something I would feel much better.

I bought my chocolate lab about 6 months ago and she has been so playful and healthy up until a friend brought her to new puppies over to show them off. I found out on July 7th that my baby has parvo its now the 11th and she seems to be getting worse instead of better and its breaking my heart. I get so attached I've been crying and so upset. Is it possible for a puppy to carry parvo but not be sick because she was fine til the other puppies came over its so odd. I'm not able to afford to pay out anymore money to help her and I don't know what to do I'm a emotional wreck today. Please pray for my baby Cocoa.

I am a hobby breeder and had a liter of Labradoodles a lady purchased a puppy and had her son pick up the puppy to bring to her 300 miles away only to find out she was allergic and needed to return the puppy, I agreed, wrong thing to do as she returned the puppy and it came down with Parvo, The puppy had a first shot at 6 wks and was due for 9 wk shot. So somewhere along the road between her house and mine and back he contacted parvo, Luckily all my dogs are fully vaccinated and all other puppies were gone. So now the puppy is at the vets trying to survive and looking at $250- $500 in vet bill. The vet called and said he might come home today , he has only been there little over 24 hours, hope they are not rushing it, have read of gatorade and other gentle feeding on stomach so will try this, any other advise is greatly appreciated Thank you and will let you know the out come

My dog has parvo
I just found out today my 6 month old poodle has parvo. I have 3 other adult dogs, and hopefully they are safe. I got their boosters today, and got them out of the house as soon as I saw the poo in the floor. I have bleached all evening! Pepper started throwing up last night, and I took him this morning to the vet. I hope and pray my little sweet pepper makes it.

There is light at the end of the Parvo darkness. The day I was suppose to pick up my new Great Dane puppy the breeder told me the whole litter got Parvo. The breeder lost 3 of the 9 puppies during treatment. My puppy survived. I have had him for a month and he is a happy, healthy puppy--now 12 weeks old and weights 35 pounds!!

Hi Vicky, My dog Rollo got parvo when he was 8 weeks old, it was a very rough time for me and him. He was with the vet for a week, almost put him down because he wasn't showing signs of improvement, but I kept fighting for him and I'm glad I did, he came out of it ok. My dog has the worst of luck too, not to long ago he ate an entire pack of birth control and a box of chocolates and he's ok. All I can say is hang in there, it will be worth it in the end, you'll love your dog more then you ever thought you could.

RE: Surviving Parvo
My husband and I adopted a rott/coonhound from a shelter on the 10th of this month and was diagnosed with Parvo on the 16th. She only weighed 5.41 pounds and is about nine weeks of age. We immediately took her to a specialist where they put her on fluids via iv, antibiotics and then a plasma transfusion, which came from a dog that had survived Parvo so it contains tons of antibodies. She had her first Parvo vaccination when she was about six weeks of age and I had her second (which our vet called the first due to the fact that he doesn't like starting them until eight weeks of age) on the 14th. About twelve hours into her treatment, she was like a brand new puppy. They said she had started to wiggle around, tried to eat her catheter and so on. I can't stress enough how important it is to get your pup in the SECOND they change their behavior. Once she threw up that night, we just knew something was wrong. It evened amazed the staff how quick she bounced back. I have her home now and she is on a diet of lean ground turkey, of which, she gets two teaspoons, micro-waved, every three hours. She gets her antibiotic drops every twelve. As long as she keeps things down, (so far, so good) then she should be fine. All of you keep the hope and say lots of prayers for your sick puppies. With good, constant care, they may pull through. Keep your home super clean and bleach your floors. I pray our baby makes it and I hope at some point she can donate plasma and help another sick pup. I don't think there is anything worse than coming so close to loosing something so precious.

We had two dogs Lucky and Chucky. Both were infected with parvo and unfortunately Lucky died. I researched and found that mixing a Qt of gatorade with 1/2 a tsp of chlorine bleach and dosing them an ounce every Hr. can probably help. I did try this and fortunately Chucky is alive! I was a little too late with Lucky because i didn't know what he had in the beginning but when i did find out it was too late and Chucky was barely starting to get the symptoms of Parvo. Vets probably don't recommend this but i gave it a shot. I also gave it oatmeal water, pedialite, and Gatorade (by itself also) Good luck! The main thing to do is keep them hydrated as much possible.

I sat at the vet hospital for 5 hours watching my baby suffer! He is only 7 months old! They all look at him as if he is a grown dog because he is so big. but he isnit! They said he has a better chance in fighting it because he is so large. Please pray my baby makes it through this terrible disease! We all love him! Here is a pic of him at 4 months.

My 14 week old Great Pyrenees was diagnosed yesterday a Friday but has been sick since Tuesday. Vet says if he survives over the weekend he should be ok. He's staying with the vet on IV fluids. I hope he pulls through. Vet said if he doesn't call then he's doing good. If he does then it means it's time to say goodbye.
One day has passed 2 to go hopefully he doesn't call. If anyone has any encouragement please give it. I need it. I was going to start him on home treatment with Parvaid an herbal treatment that is said to increase his chances by 84%, but my husband thought that the treatment should be taken care of by the vet not by us. I guess he's right they studied this stuff not me.

My puppy has been diagnosed with parvo. We paid about 500$ for at home treatment plan. Not to mention his brother who we got the same day, might now have it. I caught the signs of it early so it's only day 2 of treatment and Shylo is playing around, jumping, and eating small small amounts.
The under the skin treatment is keeping him hydrated very well, please pray for my Mr. Lolo.

Please pray for my drake! He is a pitt and only 11 weeks, he got parvo from our yard, we think. He didn't have it when we got him from a great breeder. This will be the 5th day at the vets. He's so sick, hooked up to the ivs and all. The ones who wrote about their dog living, give us hope.

RE: Surviving Parvo
TIME IS IMPORTANT GET YOUR DOG TO A VET!
Our new 3 mo old female pitbull puppy, Lucki, started acting sick last monday afternoon. very lethargic, would not eat or drink anything. She only wanted to cuddle on the couch with us. Lucki was normally very playful and ate like a horse so obviously something was wrong. I figured she was just not feeling well, had a cold or something. Tuesday afternoon rolled around and she had made no improvement, was shaking, stomach rumbling, and obviously in pain. Our new pup is the love or our life and my 12 year old daughters best friend. It was time to call the vet. when i described the symptoms to her over the phone - would not eat or drink, runny stool, gas, very tired, whining, high fever, etc, she immediately thought it might be parvo (which i had no exparience with). we took her in and sure enough it was.
after reading about it online i honestly thought i was fighting a loosing battle, and to be honest with you im broke. i am on a 3 mo layoff from work (not that i make much more when i am working...ha), so im limited to unemployment and my fiance's salary. when the vet started talking numbers, i went into shock. but i love my dog and i shouldnt have got one if im not going to take financial responsability. plus, our fantastic vet at alexandria animal hospital worked out payments with me (any good vet should care about animal health not $$$ up front). in fact, she is the one who convinced me she could save her, despite how sad, negative, worried, upset, and broke i was. i agreed to do everything i could, i was so upset. me, my daughter, and my fiace love my dog so much, we had to. still in the back of my mind, i was worried that i was going to end up spending $1,500 (didnt end up spending nearly that much) and loosing our new best friend.
The thing about parvo is hydration and antibiotics as well as anti vomiting meds. hydration, hydration, hydration! i was so fortunate that i reacted quickly and got her to the vet. im still kicking myself for waiting one day. TRUST ME ONE DAY CAN SAVE OR LOOSE YOUR DOG! we took lucki to the vet on tuesday afternoon. today is saturday and she came home this morning. thats a pretty quick turnaround time for parvo from what i hear. she is still not 100% and today is her first day home, but she is fine now (meds make her sleepy and upset stomach). i dunno. i guess i just felt that i needed to let everyone know that TIME MEANS YOUR DOGS LIFE! i dont feel like its safe to try home meds and HOPE they work. after seeing my dog at the vet for the last four days, the vomiting, the bloody stools, the dehydration, i KNOW she would have died if i tried to take care of it myself. THEY NEED CONSTANT IV"S AND MEDS IF YOU WANT TO GUARANTEE SURVIVAL!
also, i cant believe some of the vet stories on here. our vet has a VERY high survival rate. IF YOUR VET WONT WORK WITH YOU ON THE COST YOU SHOULD FIND A NEW VET!!!!!
Today is Lucki's first day home with us. she is still not 100 %. still on antivomit meds, stool hardners, a special bland diet and obviously antibiotics, but i can tell she is going to be ok and recover 100%. I credit it only to the fact that she has a great vet and we got her there quickly. i mean im nobody, but i can tell you that parvo can be different with different dogs and there are many different strains. it can be absolutely brutal and kill your dog within a few days. take em to a good vet and ask about thier success rate. by the way, my bill was only a little over $800, and i have only put down $200. much thanks to my vet for the payments...otherwise my girl would be dead.

RE: Surviving Parvo
Our pup got parvo when she was barely 6 months old. She barely weighed 6 lbs. She survived and is now almost 14. There is hope. She was in the vets for almost a week on an iv drip as well. Her leg was the worse thing getting healed after the episode, from the IV. She would not use it for a week, until I filled the bathtub and put her in. When she had to swim, she discovered she could use her leg again and all was fine. You can hold out hope. It is possible even for a small dog to survive this.

RE: Surviving Parvo
We had gotten a puppy from the shelter. Within one week she was very sick with Parvo. The shelter said to bring her back and pick out something else. NO WAY! We did the same thing as you. IV's etc. She pulled through! Lady lived to be 10 years old! She was the best dog we EVER had. She always acted very grateful to be alive and loved having the kids play with her and dress her up in different costumes. She always managed to sneak into all the pictures being taken. Here's a picture of my husband and I with Lady getting into the act.

RE: Surviving Parvo
Parvo can be deadly and a lot depends on the condition of the dog before getting parvo. A healthy dog has a better chance, obviously. Sounds like your dog is getting treatment and that's the best you can do. Just remember when she comes home NOT to rush food. Stick with cream of wheat, rice, oatmeal...stuff that won't irritate an already irritated stomach. As far as her health after getting over this is concerned, once over it completely she should be as good as new. My husband is a veterinarian and I've worked with him for 22 years and have seen many, many cases of parvo. Just remember to vaccinate according to your vets recommendations and DO NOT go with home vacs. You can do everything right yourself but you have no way of knowing how the vaccine was handled before you bought it. We have had to send vaccine back to the comapny because it arrived warm but who knows if a feed store will do this. Our DOCTOR had to approve of all drug shipments, not an employee who didn't know the possibilities.

RE: Surviving Parvo
Gatorade. My mother had a pup years ago that had parvo and she had fed him gatorade until he got better. The dog lived past 15.

RE: Surviving Parvo
Parvo on puppys is very hard. My lab had it about 3yrs ago when he was only 2mo old. He was a sick puppy for about 2 wks, but was one of the lucky ones that pulled thru. He was larger than most pups and the doc said he was definately a fighter. He's never suffered any adverse effects to being sick and is an extremely healthy 85lb dog now! Good luck
