Which Towel Dries Faster?

Which one would dry faster?

Take 2 flat towels, both washed and identical, hung to dry on a wire rack. Hang one from one end, lay the other flat. Both are in the same room. Neither receives more heat nor air circulation. Neither will drip.

Which will dry faster?

Its only a guess, but I am thinking the towel laid flat would dry faster. Because it is a liquid water would travel to the lowest point of the towel i.e. the bottom of the towel. Because the one laying flat has a bigger bottom surface overall, not only would the water not have as far to travel, but more water surface would be exposed to air for drying.

In the other scenario with the towel hanging, water takes time to travel to the end of the towel pointing down. Then, it can evaporate in increments. the bottom dries first, then is replaced by more water coming down from the top.

But as I said, this is only a guess on my part.. I am glad you are asking questions. It always good to know how to reason and think. Its almost a lost art!
Best of luck,

I'm guessing it's the towel hung the long way horizontally. It would not get so much water draining down into the hem than it would hung in half the other way. Is this a riddle? Interesting anyway!

Need to figure out the most efficient method of drying and haven't been able to catch it in time.
